WHAT IS PARASOMNIAS

Para comes from the Greek word para meaning besides and somnia from the latin word somnus These are syndromes manifested by abnormal activity of some kind during sleep. These activities can be abnormal movements, dreams, sensations or emotions. Common parasomnias include night terrors, nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking and legs/body jerks. Parasomnias may be more disturbing to the bed partner than they are to the individual who actually experiences them. On some occasions, they may be manifestations of an underlying neurological problem. Accurate diagnosis of the problem can lead to appropriate therapy which is best handled by a Sleep Medicine expert. The providers at DSM Sleep Specialists are skilled in all aspects of Sleep Medicine.
